Poker is a game of strategy where players place bets to win the pot. It is a great way to learn about risk and reward, as well as develop your decision making skills.

Each player pays a small amount of money, called the ante, before they are dealt cards. Then there is a round of betting, where players can choose to call, raise, or fold. The person with the highest hand wins the pot.

During this round, it is important to only bet when you have a good hand. This will force weaker hands out of the game and increase your chances of winning. It is also a great time to try some bluffing!

Before a new hand begins, the player to the left of the button must place a bet (called the blinds). Then each player can decide whether or not to raise. If they raise, the other players must either match the amount or fold.

After the betting round, the dealer will shuffle the discards and draw replacement cards. This is called the “flop.” Then each player can decide if they want to keep their cards or if they want to replace them.

The highest hand is five of a kind (five aces, five kings, etc.). In the event of a tie, the high card breaks it. The lowest hand is a pair, which consists of two distinct cards. If there is no pair, the high card breaks it.
