The Basics of Poker
Poker is a family of card games that pits players against each other to see who has the best hand. In poker, players wager on the best hand and compete to win the pot. Like most games, the game has rankings and rules for the best hands. Here are the most common ranks in poker: Aces, Kings, Queens, and Kings. Then, there are different types of hands. The rules of the game determine the ranking for each type of hand.
Before the dealer reveals the cards, players may be required to put money into the pot before the game begins. This is called the “ante.” The first player to make a bet is referred to as the “bet.” The next player to bet is referred to as the “caller,” while the player who bets more than the previous player is said to raise. A player may also check, or stay in without betting, during the betting period. If no other players have bet, the betting interval ends.
Various rules govern how players should play poker. In most variants of the game, players may be required to contribute to the pot before the game starts. This is called the “ante.” Once a player has a hand of five cards, they are considered the “better” of that hand. The first player is known as the “bettor”, while the last is known as the ‘raiser’. Usually, the players who make the first bet are called the “active player” in the game.
