A poker game is played with chips, typically one chip per player. The earliest known version was played with a standard deck of twenty cards. Nowadays, most games use a standard deck of fifty or sixty-two cards, but in some countries, the deck is shorter. In general, each player “buys in” to the game by purchasing chips. In a typical game, each player is paid the same amount of chips. The goal is to get the highest hand in the shortest amount of time.

While poker is a card game, it is also a game of chance. The dealer shuffles the cards and changes them after each hand. There are usually five to seven players at a table. Bets are placed in front of the players’ cards, and the winner takes the pot. The hand of the winning player is never revealed.
