How to Write About Poker in a College Essay

Poker is a game of cards and chips that requires a lot of skill to win. While it is true that there is some luck involved, poker is also a game of strategy and math. Writing about the game in a college essay can be a great way to show your interest in it and demonstrate your writing skills to admissions officers.

There are many different types of poker, but most involve betting between two or more players. Each player must either call the bet, raise it (increase it), or concede. Usually, the game is played with a deck of 52 cards and chips that represent money. The cards are shuffled and dealt in rotation around the table. The turn to bet passes from one player to the next after each deal.

A standard pack of 52 cards contains the four suits, plus the joker, which counts as a wild card and can be used to complete a flush, straight, or certain other hands. Players can also use other cards in their own hand to improve it.

The first round of betting begins when each player receives 2 hole cards. There are usually 2 mandatory bets called blinds placed into the pot by the players to the left of the dealer before the cards are dealt. Players can also “call” the bet, raise it, or fold. If a player folds, they lose all the chips they have put into the pot.
