Poker

Generally, the best way to play poker is with a group of people who know what they’re doing. However, poker can be played professionally for thousands of dollars.

Poker can be played with as little as two players, and as many as eight. The goal of the game is to make the best hand possible. A winning hand is a combination of three cards and five cards in the same suit.

A player may choose to use one card from his hand or shuffle the rest. Cards are usually dealt face down. The dealer has the final say on shuffling.

Aside from the cards, each player has an obligation to make the first bet in each round of betting. This bet is called an ante. Typically, the ante is a small bet.

The best possible hand is a pair of aces plus a wild card, or a trip sevens. Aside from the standard hands, there are numerous variations of the game.

A player who is all in can only win pots to which he has contributed. A player who is all in might not be entitled to his share of the kitty, the small denomination chip used to pay for new decks of cards. A player who leaves the game before the end may still have a claim on the kitty, but not for the same reason a player who wins a hand might.

There are a number of poker variants, including no limit, limit, and pot limit. The kitty is a special fund set aside for the purpose of paying for new decks of cards and food.
