Slot

A narrow opening for a coin or other item in a machine.

A position in a series or sequence, or the job of a person. He had the slot of chief copy editor.
A position in a game, such as the slot of the team that shoots first or the slot of an attacker who goes to the net after a center-ice face-off.

The slot is an important area in ice hockey because it gives players the best chance to score without a deflection. Defensemen will often try to keep the puck away from the slot, whereas attacking players such as wingers and centers are more likely to gain a strong vantage point in it.

Although some people believe that there are “hot” slots, the likelihood of hitting one is much the same as the probability of rolling a six on a dice roll: it’s just a matter of time until the machine stops giving out those numbers. The same is true of the jackpots on slot machines: they are won over a massive number of combinations every minute, and the odds of getting a particular symbol are no different than those for any other one.

Getting greedy or betting more than you can afford to lose are the 2 biggest pitfalls of playing slot machines. It’s important to remember that gambling is not a way to get rich, and even those huge jackpots are only paid by other gamblers — not casinos. If you’re having trouble controlling your spending while playing slots, consider seeking help.
